Ceyla Karamanci, Doctorate of Clinical Psychology TraineeÌý

I hold an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Washington University in St Louis, USA and a Cognitive Psychology Doctoral Degree (PhD) from Koc University in Istanbul, Turkey. Currently I am in my second year in the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Training (DClinPsy) at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË, working as a trainee clinical psychologist in various NHS settings as well as working on research, both for my major research project and my Service Related Research Project (SRRP).

I believe that the UCL University Clinic offers as excellent a training for mental health practitioners as for mental health researchers. Supervision in both is exceptional. I was privileged to be supervised by Dr Joshua Buckman, the clinical director, who is embedded in academics, research, and mental health practice, which meant that I was supported on all paths. During my time at the UCL University Clinic, I have completed a service-related research project, in which I aimed to understand if commonly used measures of depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire; PHQ-9) and Generalised Anxiety Disorder symptoms (GAD-7) are perceived similarly and hold the same factor structures for young adult service users who were students and who were not students. I was given the chance to incorporate and learn STATA, which I found invaluable. Even though my placement at the UCL University Clinic has come to an end, we are still in contact and writing our findings for publication.

I would recommend the UCL university clinic to all mental health practitioners. The clinic offers practitioners the chance to develop their theory practice links in a very supportive environment. During my time at the clinic, I was able to develop my cognitive behavioural therapy skillset and worked with a variety of mental health presentations whileÌýincorporating third-wave approaches. I was able to work independently and develop my identity as a practitioner. Additionally, my supervision always felt appropriately challenging and encouraging. I couldn't recommend it enough!
