Neurodegeneration research focuses on the characterisation of neurodegenerative processes in prion disease in humans and animal models. We have led two large-scale epidemiological/surveillance studies where we determined the prevalence of vCJD prions in the UK population. Our recent discovies were the transmission of amyloid beta between humans through medical procedures and our ongoing and future research aims at a wider understanding of the pathology, and the modes of transmission.
Neuro-oncology: development of mouse models for brain tumours. Demonstration of a genotype-phenotype correlation brain tumours. Molecular profiling of mouse tumours show a correlation to certain types of human gliomas, thus making it a valuable model for technology development, and biomarker discovery. We have recently discovered biomarkers (miR-449a and GPR158) that correlate with survival of patients with gliomas, making it a potential druggable target.
