13 June 2023

Building on previous COP successes, we will be organising a group to represent »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË at COP28. Find out more and how to apply to be a part of the UCL team below.

COP28 HEADER

We are excited to announce that »Ê¼Ò»ªÈËÌýwill be sending a group to the 28th session of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP 28), held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 30 November until 12 December 2023.

COP28 is a crucial event where world leaders, scientists, and activists come together to address the pressing challenges of climate change.

Application process and selection

To ensure fair representation, UCL has limited places available for COP28. All interested colleagues and early career researchers are required to complete the application form by 12 noon on Friday, 7th July 2023 to be considered for a place. Please note that this will be our only university allocation, and additional tickets cannot be sourced after this process.Ìý

The selection process will be overseen by a panel from the Environment Domain and Sustainable UCL teams, who will assess the applications based on several criteria:

  • Motivation, interest, and commitment to representing UCL at COP28, including an understanding and demonstration of awareness of climate and environmental research and activity across the university.
  • Relevance of research expertise/role at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË and alignment with
  • Promotion of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in climate-related spaces and beyond, as well as championing the breadth and diversity of UCL's research and voices.

Who can applyÌý

We encourage applications from all staff and early career researchers andÌýbelieve that success is built on the diversity of our community. Therefore we would like to encourage applications from a wide range of colleagues, particularly those who identify as belonging to one of more under represented group(s) at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË andÌýthe wider climate research space.Ìý

Experience of outreach and attendance at COP previously is not necessary, however, by applying for a university place, you are committing to represent »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË at COP28.ÌýThisÌýincludes attending pre-event training, contributing to university outputs and communications during the event, and engaging in post-COP evaluation and activities.Ìý

At least one ticket will be allocated to an early career researcher, this includes PhD students, PDRAs and early career lecturers/researchers.ÌýPlease note we cannot accept applications from undergraduate or masters students.Ìý

We are working with the Students Union at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË to ensure representation from the student body via the elected officers and to plan a range of engagement activities around COP28 to elevate student voices and expertise.

Funding

Sustainable UCL have a limited fund to support travel and accommodation costs (excluding expenses) for ECRs and colleagues where funding is not available, as we do not want lack of funding to be a barrier for attendance. However, as these funds are very limited weÌýdo kindly ask that where you have access to a budget that could support your travel and accommodationÌýthat you use this to help preserve funds for those who need to access them.Ìý

Ìý

COP28 offers a unique opportunity to be part of the global conversation on climate change and contribute to finding solutions for a sustainable future. We look forward to reading your applications!
