鈥淓xactly听how听trade and environment should be integrated remains highly contentious, despite听the consistent pledges by the international community to ensure 鈥榤utual supportiveness鈥 between international trade and environmental听policies as a means to achieve sustainable development,鈥 explains Dr Gracia Marin Duran (UCL Laws).听听

A research-led and interactive module in UCL听Laws听equips听students with advanced knowledge and critical understanding of the听increasingly complex interaction听between international trade and environmental protection.听听

The LLM听Law and Policy of International Trade and the Environment is centred on problem-based learning and gives students the opportunity to explore real-world case studies of prominent environmental measures or principles and their relationship with听World Trade Organization听disciplines.听听

鈥淓xactly听how听trade and environment should be integrated remains highly contentious, despite听the consistent pledges by the international community to ensure 鈥榤utual supportiveness鈥.鈥澨

Most of the trade鈥揺nvironment听interface听examined in the module听relates to听climate change mitigation (eg,听border carbon adjustments and promotion of climate-friendly, renewable energy)听and is thus closely connected with听SDG7:听Affordable and Clean Energy and听SDG13:听Climate Action. It听also considers听other global environmental concerns, such as听biodiversity, conservation, precaution and fair and equitable profit-sharing, as well as the fight against unsustainable fishing practices听鈥 the latter being directly linked to听SDG14: Life Below Water.听听

By bringing together students from the different听LLM听specialisms within one classroom, the module听seeks听to encourage mutual learning and constructive exchange on the heated 鈥榯rade-and-environment鈥 debate.听
