Advanced Adult Rehabilitation

Overview

This masterclass is ideal if you have some experience working with people with hearing loss and want to improve your knowledge and rehabilitation skills.

The course is run by the UCL Ear Institute.

Who this course is for

This course is for those working in the following professions:

  • Audiologists
  • Rehabilitationists
  • Social workers and other professionals who work with deaf/hard of hearing adults

Course content

This course explores the following themes:

  • Cognition and hearing
  • Hearing therapies
  • Innovative technologies and treatments

Teaching and structure

The course will run over 4 consecutive Wednesdays (with a fifth session the following week for those taking the assessment) and each day will be roughly 3 hours long.

Sessions will enable you to participate in discussions with leading experts in the field from universities in the UK and overseas, clinical audiology services and voluntary organisations. Throughout the course period there will be opportunities to interact with like-minded colleagues and the course organisers, Dr Hannah Cooper and Dr Lucy Handscomb. 

Certificates and accreditation

You will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the masterclass.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this masterclass, students will be able to:

  1. Discuss the emotional and social experiences of people who develop hearing loss in adulthood.
  2. Use a person-centred approach to aural rehabilitation
  3. Describe different hearing therapy practices, and know which are appropriate for different audiology patients
  4. Understand and evaluate evidence about a range of strategies used to increase participation
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of alternative aids to communication
  6. Work effectively with aural rehabilitation groups
  7. Evaluate the evidence to support new and emerging technologies and therapies for adults with hearing loss.  
  8. Discuss the patient pathway and management options for adults with complex needs.  

Costs

The standard course fees are as follows:

  • £690 without assessments
  • £1258 with assessments

Places can be booked by credit/debit card up to 48 hours before the start of the course, subject to availability.

For payments by invoice

To secure a place, a purchase order document must be received within 7 working days of the course start date.

Cancellations

If you wish to cancel your order for a course after it is accepted by us and outside of any period in which you might have a right to cancel, then the following applies.

Your cancellation must be received in writing no later than 14 days before the start of the Course. If we receive your cancellation no later than 14 days before the start of the Course we will refund any amount you have paid to us for that Course less an administration charge of 20%. No refunds will be made for cancellations made by you within 14 days of the Course date.

Dr Lucy Handscomb

Dr Lucy Handscomb

Lucy is a lecturer in audiology with a special interest in psycho-social aspects of hearing loss and rehabilitation. Her main research focus is improving the effectiveness of tinnitus therapy.

Dr Hannah Cooper

Dr Hannah Cooper

Hannah is a lecturer in audiology at the UCL Ear Institute and also works part time as an audiologist at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. Her main areas of research are in the neurodevelopment of children at risk of hearing problems, and the use of technology to improve outcomes for children with hearing loss.
