Laser Safety Officer training
Departments that use Class 3B and Class 4 lasers must have at least one appointed Laser Safety Officer who has attended the Laser Safety Officer training course.
Course description
This one-day virtual training course runs every spring and is hosted by . ItÌýis designed for individuals who will be appointed as a departmental Laser Safety Officer ("LSO") or as a refresher for those already appointed to this role. It will provide nominated LSOsÌýwith the information and knowledge needed to effectively carry out the role of Laser Safety Officer at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË.
The course meets the requirements of and the LSO responsibilities outlined in the UCL Artificial Optical Radiation Safety Standard.
All safety instructor-led training courses are delivered by our team of safety experts.
Objectives
By completing this course you will gain an understanding of the following:
- Basics of laser radiation
- Biological effects of laser radiation (including indirect effects)
- Effective laser safety management
- The role of the Laser Safety Officer at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË
- Approving laser risk assessments and setups
- Practical control measures (hierarchy of controls, including PPE)
- Incidents, accidents and contingency plans
- Legislation, standards, and guidance
Target audience
Users of laser systems that include Class 3R, 3B and 4 lasers; room users where Class 3R, 3B and 4 lasers are used.
Cost
Training courses are free to UCL staff however your Department will be charged £50 if you fail to attend when booked on a course.Ìý Non-attendance at first aid courses will incur a higher non-attendance fee.
