Radiation Safety Sub-Committee: terms of reference

Information regarding the Radiaiton Safety Sub-Committee's responsibilities.

Purpose

°Õ³ó±ðÌýWork Health and Safety CommitteeÌý(WHSC) has established the Radiation Safety Sub Committee (RSSC) to make recommendations regarding ionising radiation safety.Ìý The RSSC will advise the WHSC when aÌýtopic is or could be considered a significant hazard.ÌýÌýThe RSSC is a management committee.

Organisation and meetings

  1. MakeÌýrecommendations to the WHSC for final consultation and decisions via submission of a paper and addition to the WHSC agenda.
  2. TakeÌýand respond to any particular or general direction given by the WHSC.
  3. AgreeÌýannually with the WHSCÌýthe scope of the topic covered by the RSSCÌýincluding the requirement to establish or continue any work groups.
  • Review the terms of reference annuallyÌýand documentÌýthe discussion and action required.Ìý
  • Provide quarterly and annual reports to the WHSC.
  • SetÌýthe number of meetings per year.
  • SetÌýthe number of members and number required for a quorum.
  • Set,Ìýif required, any additional training or competence requirements for members including the Chair.
  • SetÌýkey performance measures.

Duties and responsibilities

  1. To advise the UMC, through the WHSC, on all matters relating to ionising radiation safety at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË.
  2. To propose, develop, approve, monitor and report on the implementation and effectiveness of UCL’s policy and safety standards for work with ionising radiation.
  3. A standard agenda will be followed at each meeting, incorporating the following items as a minimum:
  • Reports from the UCL Head of Radiation Safety and appointed Radiation Protection Adviser
  • Report from the UCH Head of Radiation Physics and appointed Radioactive Waste Adviser, Radiation Protection Adviser and Medical Physics Expert
  • Review of any accidents, incidents or near misses relating to ionising radiation
  • Review of dosimetry results
  • Review of action data from assurance programme
  • Agree any matters that should be communicated to Radiation Protection Supervisors
  • Agree on any matters that should be communicated to other relevant stakeholders (e.g. registered radiation workers etc.)
  • Agree any matters to escalate to the Work Health and Safety Committee, which will be communicated via the quarterly report

A quorum of a minimum of five members including two RPSs are required for the meeting to go ahead.
