25 January 2023

Team effort achieves Level 1 of the Target 100 self-assessment and planning tool demonstrating commitment to health and safety.

Dept of Chemical Engineering is first »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË department to achieve Level 1 of Target 100

Dr Patrick Ward, Executive Director of Health and Safety, congratulates Prof. Eva Sorensen and Dr Ralph Hick.

Safety Services is delighted to announce that the Department of Chemical Engineering is the first department at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË to achieve Level 1 of the Target 100 programme.

This achievement is thanks to the efforts of the entire department, led by Dr Ralph Hick, Technical Safety Officer and supported by the entire Senior Management Team including the Head of the Department, Prof. Eva Sorensen.

An effective health and safety management system is the cornerstone of a positive health and safety culture, which is why it is included UCL's current Health and Safety Objectives.

What is Target 100

Every department has risks and hazards that are unique to them and the Target 100 (T100) programme helps departments successfully grow their safety management system to meet these individual needs.

There are 4 levels for high hazard departments to achieve T100

  • Baseline Compliance with UCL Safety Standards as stated in the UCL Health and Safety Policy.
  • Level 1 Providing a system that is procedure driven rather than relying on the knowledge of a few.
  • Level 2 Integrating those procedures from Level 1 into the day-to-day business of the department through communication, supervision and leadership.
  • Level 3 Evolving the system to meet the needs of UCL and the department by identifying improvements based on those needs, this includes making changes based on the understanding of risk and best practices from the wider world.

T100 Lite for low hazard departments

Safety Services appreciates that »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË's Safety Standards cover the majority of the safety procedures required in low hazard departments and has designed the T100 Lite tool to ensure that low hazard departments have the support to integrate the safety management system into their day-to-day business.
