Announcing the launch of our new Nuclear Safeguards training

The Nuclear Safeguards (EU Exit) Regulations require UCL to maintain an inventory of nuclear materials. Our new training will equip you with essential skills to correctly weigh, label, and track nuclear safeguards materials.

Safety Services is pleased to announce two specialised Nuclear Safeguards eLearning Training Courses, designed to equip staff and Nuclear Safeguards Inventory Co-ordindators (NMIC) with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct accurate and efficient inventories of nuclear materials within UCL. This training is essential to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and UCL governance frameworks.

Nuclear Safeguards for Users training


This new training course will help you to understand the importance of nuclear accountancy protocols at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË by giving you essential knowledge and skills to ensure the correct handling, storage and management of nuclear materials. 

The course will take you through the following:

  • Identification: Identifying nuclear materials covered by the Nuclear Safeguards (EU Exit) Regulations.
  • Ordering: Understanding the correct process for ordering and reporting nuclear material.
  • Accurate labelling and record-keeping: Training you in proper labeling and record-keeping procedures.
  • Weighing techniques: Considering the pitfalls that can prevent accurate weighing.
  • Disposal: Understanding the process for disposing of nuclear materials at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË.

Nuclear Safeguards for Nuclear Material Inventory Co-ordinators training


NMICs are responsible for co-ordinating the handling, storage, transportation, and tracking of nuclear materials within their departments. NMICs are required to complete this additional course designed to equip you with the essential knowledge to manage and track nuclear materials effectively. 

The course will take you through the following:

  • UCL governance framework: Ensuring adherence to UCL regulatory frameworks and standards for nuclear material reporting.
  • Safety procedures: Understanding the wider radiation procedures and applying them to nuclear materials.
  • Inventory management: Understanding the processes for recording the acquisition, tracking and disposal of nuclear materials, enabling comprehensive material inventory management.
