A Good Story, Well Told:听Utilizing Digital Storytelling in Qualitative Research

Digital Storytelling (DST) is a facilitated, autobiographical media production methodology where a participant creates their own short-film about an important moment in their life using voiceover narration, photos, videos, music and various video editing techniques.听 These short-films are called 鈥淒igital Stories鈥� and are generally between 2-5 minutes in length.

DST as a methodology was first conceived in the early 90s and since then has been used for听,听,听, and听听across many disciplines and topic areas. In a qualitative research context, both the process (DST) and product (Digital Stories) can be used for a range of knowledge generation and dissemination purposes and cultivate meaningful engagement with relevant stakeholders.

This interactive workshop will:

1. Provide a basic overview of DST Methodology (including history, theoretical perspectives, ethics, and processes),
2. Share examples of Digital Stories and DST uses in qualitative research (most examples will be related to health and wellness),
3. Explore why, when, and how qualitative researchers can begin to incorporate DST into their work.

Due to the 2-hour length, attendees will not gain all the knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate DST experiences with their research populations, but they will leave with a clear picture of how they could use DST to generate knowledge and share it beyond the halls of academia.听

• No prior knowledge of Digital Story Telling is assumed.听 Just bring听an open and creative mind听
• You do not need to be a health researcher to participate in this workshop
• Only 20 places are available

About Mike Lang
Dr. Mike Lang is a health researcher,听award winning filmmaker, Digital Storytelling facilitator and adjunct assistant professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary, Canada. He has directed听and produced three feature-length documentaries, two short documentaries, and three web series about the human health experience in addition to numerous health education curricula. Mike has also published 21 academic articles and facilitated the creation of over 900 digital stories (short-films) with people around the world. His professional and research focus is on using digital storytelling and documentary filmmaking听in听education, advocacy,听research, and听a therapeutic听capacity within health and wellness contexts.
