Every year UCL Accommodation welcomes nearly 7,000 students into Halls, and hosts a range of activities to support our new residents including a fun Welcome Party. This annual event is held during the move in weekend and is designed to foster community among UCL students. This year's party had a seaside theme, which included vibrant colourful decorations, fun beach toys and quirky party photobooth accessories.

After the party, instead of packing away the decorations, Event Manager Hannah Slater investigated ways to reuse and recycle the items from the party. Her goal was to incorporate a wider element of sustainability and connection with the local community into the welcome activities. Given the fun theme of the party, she felt that a local children’s charity would be the most suitable recipient.

She connected with , a play charity for children and young people based in Camden and foundedÌýby a group of parentsÌýwanting to provide high quality play and childcare services in the area. Working with children from 2-18 years old, the seaside themed items were a perfect match for an organisation that aims to improve wellbeing and inspire creativity.

Among the items donated were buckets and spades, wooden ice lollies, beach balls, bunting and fun sunglasses. Having already inspired creativity at the Welcome Party for new residents of UCL Accommodation, now these items have found a new purpose in supporting the development and activities of the Pace for All community.

Jamie Dippie, Chief Operational Officer at Pace for All said, ‘We are so pleased with the range of items donated by UCL Accommodation. The team are already developing ways that we can incorporate them into upcoming events to improve play opportunities and inspire our local community. PACE look forward to bringing the beach life to the inner city.’

UCL Accommodation continues to develop new ways to engage with the local community.

By identifying areas where we can work with local organisations, we aim to build long term relationships that foster community and promote sustainability.
