Black History Month is a time to uncover, recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of black people to British society. This year's theme, 'Saluting our Sisters', places the focus on black women, whose achievements have too often been overlooked or forgotten.Ìý

UCL Libraries areÌýcompiling a list ofÌýbooks that celebrate the history and contributions of black women in all their diversity or that will educate, challenge and empower us all to make the world a better place. !

In addition, the Library Liberating the Collections group have also created aÌý, which is an ongoing resource to highlight black scholarship in UCL Library's collections.

Join author Dr Clive Chijioke Nwonka for the launch of his new book 'Black Boys: The Social Aesthetics of Black Urban Film'.ÌýIn person – free and open to all.

4 October 2023, 5.30–7.30pm: What now? Reducing domestic violence and reviewing refugee safety globally

Join international speakers, Dr Betty Okot and Dr Tenywa Aloysius Malagala for this Black History Month event that explores research findings related to projects focused on reducing domestic violence and reforming refugee safety.ÌýIn person – free and open to all.

4–22 October 2023 and beyond: Ghosts of Solid Air

A UCL and AHRC-funded Augmented Reality (AR) experience, Ghosts of Solid Air launchesÌýon 4 OctoberÌýas part of the 67th BFI London Film Festival.ÌýThis site-specific AR experience is designed for smartphones and takes place in and around Trafalgar and Parliament Squares in central London –Ìýjust open the app on your smartphone and allow the voices to guide you through the story.

Join this event to hear Black Panther Party Revolutionary and Global Diversity Consultant, Elmer Dixon, as he discusses his recently published book 'Die Standing' as we celebrate Black History Month.ÌýIn person – free and open to all.

11 October 2023, 6–7.30pm:

In this seminar, three London based youth workers working specifically with Black 16–18-year-olds to exchange ideas on how the educational work undertaken by them within racially diverse communities may contribute to their knowledge and expectations. In person – free and open to all.

12ÌýOctober 2023, 1–2pm: UCL Department of Earth Sciences Ethnic Diversity Network Black History Month event

This event will launch a zine on Decolonisation of the Curriculum in Geoscience, with presentations from its producers and event collaboratorsÌý. Key issues relating to race and geoscience will be discussed, and the context of research and scientific endeavours within colonial history will be explored.ÌýIn person and online, free and open to all.
