Seven Questions with... Sanjoli Mathur

5 May 2023

This week UCL alumna Sanjoli walks us through some of the exciting things she got up to while studying at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË â€“Ìýlike life-drawing classes with the UCL Art Society, market hopping in the city, and book browsingÌýon a 100-year-old Dutch boat...

Sanjoli Mathur

What are you studying, why are you interested in this subject and what do you plan to do in the future?

I studied MSc Built Environment: Sustainable Heritage, and am now working as a Research Associate at the University of East Anglia. I studied this course because I had way too many questions about heritage – especially contested heritage:Ìýits identity, its relationship with people, and how it evolves with changing times. This course was a great place to explore these questions... and find many more!

What is the most interesting thing you’ve done, seen or got involved with while at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË?

The most interesting thing I have done at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË, as ridiculous as that sounds, was my dissertation and everything that led to it and came out of it. My dissertation was on olfactory heritage – something I knew nothing about before UCL. After completing my dissertation, I got to speak at a panel discussion at Leighton House on smells and vocabulary, where I presented some of my findings. I was also part of a really cool smell training, where we were taught how to identify and talk about smells. It was really exciting for me to be in a space where you could think, discuss, and explore new ideas.

Another interesting thing was the weekly life-drawing classes with the UCL Art Society. I always wanted to do anatomy sketches, and this class made it a fun experience. We were made to do exercises such as drawing with ourÌýleft hands, drawing without lifting ourÌýpencils, and drawing using only geometric shapes.

Have you discovered any hidden gems during your time at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË?

Word on the Water. The most charming bookshop onÌýRegents Canal at Kings Cross!

Give us your top three things to do/see/go to in London:

  • If you like walking, take aÌýstroll alongÌýthe city's canals and river.
  • TakeÌýa nap at Russell Square on a sunny day, especially when you have a stressful deadline and need a break.
  • Go Christmas market hopping.

What’s one thing you’d like to see in a post-Covid world?

For all events to be hybrid!

Who inspires you and why?

The White Pube, two UK-based art critics. I've always loved their writing, their confidence, and their ability to think critically about everything – from Dishoom, to Gilmore Girls, to video games and art. I used to listen to their essays (they used to do Insta lives of them reading their latest writings!) when I needed inspiration for my essays for uni applications.

What would it surprise people to know about you?

I've written a children's book about kitchen utensils.
