UCL graduate launches Happy Work - a recruitment service that helps graduates find their ideal job after university

29 July 2015

Harry WarrenÌý(MSc PsychologyÌý2015)Ìýfirst had the ideaÌýfor Happy WorkÌýthree years ago,Ìýbut it was his experience at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË that helped make his idea a reality.

UCL graduate launches Happy Work – a recruitment service that helps graduates find their ideal job after university ÌýisÌýa recruitment service that uses personality assessment to match graduateÌýjob-seekers with specific work vacancies.

"I completed myÌýBachelor's degree in psychology at the University of Essex in June 2012," says Harry.Ìý"When I returned to London, IÌýcalled recruitment consultantsÌýand explained that I wanted a creative job centred on talking to, and helping, people. With no sense of irony, they asked: 'What specificÌýjob role would you like to do?'

"How on earth would I, or any other non-vocational undergraduate, know the answer to that question? Even if I decided on a specific job title, companies all have their own waysÌýof doing things. Finding the right job title in the ideal work setting seemed impossible.ÌýI thought it just made sense to use personality-type matchingÌýin recruitment, so thatÌýgraduates could find a job that was the right fit."

Putting the idea on ice, HarryÌýdecided to pursue his long-term goalÌýof becoming a psychotherapist and enlisted on a psychologyÌýMaster's degree course at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË,Ìýbut the idea for Happy WorkÌýcontinued to play on his mind. It wasn't until he learned aboutÌýUCL Advances atÌýaÌýGoogle CampusÌýevent that Happy Work began to gain momentum.

"I met another studentÌýwho told me aboutÌý, anÌýeight-weekÌýcourse thatÌýgivesÌýstudentsÌýthe chance toÌýtake a business idea forward.ÌýI ended up engaging with UCL Advances and metÌýLillian Shapiro, a business advisor at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË,ÌýwhoÌýhas really helped with the development of Happy Work. She introduced me to prospective clients andÌýencouraged me to enrol on theÌýUCL Advances Idea AcceleratorÌýcourse,ÌýandÌýsince thenÌýI haven't looked back."
