From September 2008, after a summer of building works, the UCL Science Library will introduce new services and new spaces on the ground floor.

Better access
The entrance lobby has been widened and improved with a new Membership Desk and a separate Security Office. New glass walls and doors give a clear perspective of the space for users entering the building.

Wheelchair users will benefit from a fully automated gate to access theÌý library.

Improved services
Three self-service 'Issue & Renew' kiosks and two automatic 'Book Returns' will be introduced. These will simplify book circulation, enabling users to issue books from the library, access their library account and return books.

To assist with library queries, a new Enquiry & Assistance desk has been installed in the former Science Issue Desk area.

The computer cluster on the ground floor, the largest at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË, has been enhanced with 30 additional computers.

New spaces to encourage new ways of learning
New soft seating in open plan space will allow users to read printed material, access online resources through their laptops or work in small groups. Up to 44 users can enjoy the soft seating clusters and group study area, enabled with RoamNet wireless network.

A second phase of refurbishment works is planned, with a view to double the number of entrance and exit turnstiles as well as creating more group study spaces for UCL students.
