Description

This module examines how cinematic crime genres – with a non-exclusive emphasis on film noir – have developed over time and moved amid and across national cinemas to offer explorations, representations, and critique of social, political, and economic issues. Through the lens of transnationalism and genre theories, we will consider cross-cultural exchanges and the intersection of the local and the global in crime films from world-wide cinematic traditions. We will study depictions of crimes, spaces, and recurring characters (such as detectives, policemen, villains, victims, and femme fatales) to investigate filmmakers’ interpretation(s) of universal and/or culturally specific notions of gender roles, violence, power, and justice. Students will be advised that due to the nature of the module, some films contain graphic descriptions of violence.
