Description

This module enables students to continue to develop their understanding of the way in which the construction and built environment domain embraces digital technologies and digital information systems across its operations, notably in this module in the main design and construction stages. This module provides detailed coverage of data and digital information management within and beyond the design stages for projects, as a fundamental body of knowledge and competencies that will underpin other modules in the programme and the destination career paths for students on the programme. The module explores core principles and concepts in design management and control. It also explores in depth the approaches used in the construction industry to digitalise the construction process – which has consequences for design – such as greater use of automation, 3d-printing, AR/VR and mission control rooms. Relevant advantages of these are covered, and also the inherent risks associated with greater automation on site, for instance (such as human-robot safety, data management protocols and implications for resource planning). This approach provides knowledge drawn from project examples, industry guidance and textbooks, as well as skills training on relevant software. It extends the digital competences and skills that will help students be able to understand building information models, and the wider digital context within which projects are conceived, delivered and evaluated.

Lectures, seminars and discussions in class, are informed by selected reading tasks and dedicated training on Revit, the industry-standard building information management and modelling software.

Students are required to submit a term paper, and then a set of Revit drawing outputs at the end of the module. The module leader provides formative feedback on quizzes, and students gain access to the Construction Robotics Lab at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË Here East – an important professional skills development opportunity.
