PGT and Developing Technology requires a background in a related scientific or social science discipline, or a professional health qualification (medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, psychology, social work). The module is compulsory for students on the MSc Reproductive Genetics & Fetal Medicine and the MSc Reproductive Science & Women’s Health degrees. Preference will be given to Institute for Women’s Health students for whom this module is compulsory and to Institute for Women’s Health students for whom this is a recommended option.

This module covers all aspects of preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) and developing technology. Topics include embryo biopsy, PGT for chromosome abnormalities, PGT for monogenic disorders, future technology and ethical issues, the use of stem cells, mitochondrial disorders and genome editing. There will be ethical discussions and evaluation of patient cases.
After taking this module you should be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
- PGT including diagnosis of chromosome abnormalities, aneuploidy screening, monogenic disorders, and developing technology;
- Developing technology, including stem cells;
- The ethical issues surrounding PGT and developing technology and why they are important in modern society.
The module comprises of lectures presented by leaders in the field of PGT and stem cells, tutorials, practical and group discussions.
