Summary
This module will develop your knowledge and skills in paediatric critical care medicine. Content is matched to UK and global PICM curriculum.
Topics include:
- Organisation of UK Paediatric Critical Care (PCC) services including quality, benchmarking and service improvement.
- Physiological basis for critical illness.
- Advanced pharmacology: drug choices, indications and side effects.
- Organ support on the paediatric critical care unit: the physiological need and physics of therapy.
- Right line, right place, right time.
- Planning care for children with complex multisystem disease.
- Human factors in critical care environments and crew resource management.
- Current ‘Hot Topics’ in evidence-based PCC.
- End of life care
You will get the opportunity to improve your critical appraisal skills by analysing PCC literature in a Critically Appraised Topic, which will be peer-reviewed as formative feedback then assessed in final written form and during an oral presentation.
Learning Objectives and Outcomes
After taking this module, you will be able to:
- Outline organisation and delivery of paediatric critical care (PCC) services in the UK
- Understand common physiological principles underlying diseases in children requiring PCC
- Cover the wide range of presentations that may lead to PCC
- Provoke challenging debate over controversies regarding different management strategies in PCC
- Educate participants on strategies to prevention PCC admission and, where this fails, improve post-PCC transition back to the ward or referring centre
Who is this module for?
This is one of the available core modules for the MSc Paediatrics and Child Health Intensive Care pathway and an optional module for all other MSc Paediatrics and Child Health pathways.ÌýAny Level 7 students interested in taking this as an optional module, please contact the Module leader.
This module is relevant for all multi-professional colleagues with an interest or career aspirations in critical care. It will provide an excellent foundation for candidates entering paediatric critical care training (e.g. RCPCH GRID) or looking to work within paediatric HDU and / or ICU.Ìý
Teaching and Learning Methods
You will receive 5 days of in-person lectures/workshops, supplemented through online learning.
Assessment
Assessment will be via a literature-researched, Critically Appraised Topic, with formative inputs from peers, and oral presentation.
