Description
This applied module will see you implement your skills within a group dynamic as you integrate learning from Term 1 and Term 2 modules to address a real-world urban development problem presented by a client—an external partner for the programme—and manage the whole process from conceptual design, pitching your solution, collecting information, designing the solution and delivering the project to the client. Teamwork and communication are important skills that require experience and practice, and you will explore roles, responsibilities, and how to work effectively as part of a team, while developing your understanding of project planning, legislation and regulation, funding, legacy, and science communication. Building upon core programme modules, you will further develop and integrate the hard and soft skills required to solve complex problems in urban design and construction for the benefit of ecosystems, society, and biodiversity. The first term will see you establish your team, and work together to devise a practical theoretical solution which you will then pitch to your client (and peers) for critical assessment and feedback. During the second term, you will focus on the construction and delivery of your project challenge, culminating in the presentation of that solution to the client and an invited Nature-Smart Challenge audience. Lectures, problem classes and workshops will cover:
- Teamwork and leadership
- Project management
- Funding
- Science communication
- Sustainability
This module will provide you the opportunity to make meaningful contacts in industry, national and local government and NGOs via our programme partners, through which it may also be possible to develop ideas and collaborate for your Term 3 research project.
