Description
This is a compulsory module for all students studying the MSc Periodontology (distance learning) programme.
The contents of this module will include (but are not limited to):
- Periodontal and Peri-implant Tissues: comparison of anatomical, histological and clinical characteristics
- Healing of peri-implant tissues
- Indications, contra-indications and required criteria to consider a patient for implant therapy
- Systemic and local risk factors for peri-implant therapy
- Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis: diagnosis and presentation of non-surgical and surgical strategies for the management of peri-implant diseases
- Antimicrobial and adjunctive therapies
- Interdisciplinary aspects (implant/prosthodontic therapy)
- Biological and mechanical complications of dental implants
- Expected short and long-term outcomes following implant therapy, including implant success and survival
On successful completion of the module, graduates will have achieved understanding and knowledge of:
- Anatomical, histological and clinical characteristics of periodontal and peri-implant tissues including similarities and differences
- Mechanisms of healing of peri-implant hard and soft tissues
- Indications and contra-indications to implant placement
- The relevance and the impact of systemic and local risk factors in implant therapy
- Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis: diagnosis and clinical presentation
- Non-surgical and surgical strategies for management of the patient with dental implants
- Scientific evidence on the effectiveness of antimicrobial and adjunctive therapies for the management of peri-implant diseases
- Interdisciplinary aspects (implant/prosthodontic therapy)
- Biological and mechanical complications of dental implants
- Expected short and long-term outcomes following implant therapy, including implant success and survival
