Description

This moduleÌýwill introduce students to core concepts in infection and population health and the various disciplines involved in the study of infection as it relates to population health, with a focus on practical application of this knowledge. The module will synthesise understanding of the microbiology,ÌýimmunologyÌýand epidemiology of pathogens to inform infection control and public health interventions.

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  1. Understand definitions and differences between health, absence of health and disease with reference to infection (in particular, the difference between symptomatic and asymptomatic infection)
  2. Understand the basic microbiology, virology and immunology of infectiousÌýdiseases
  3. Appraise the basic pathogenesis with a focus on transmission and infectiousness, reasons for symptomatic and asymptomatic disease, and incubation periods.
  4. Outline the principles behind surveillance and other methods of measuring infectiousÌýdisease
  5. Describe how broader determinants such as policy, the law, health systems and the economic environment impact on infectiousÌýdisease
  • Be aware of the interventions for infections and multi-disciplinary methods to evaluate the impact ofÌýtheseÌý
  • on infectious disease
  • Recognise the importance of identifying and effectively communicating and engaging key stakeholders such as patients, public and policy makers.

·This is a compulsory module for students in the MSc Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology.

This module will be delivered using a mixture of interactive lectures, seminars and groupÌýpracticals, and formative work including presentations and peer feedback on written work. The module is led by IGH; the module leads and tutors within IGH will carry out the bulk of teaching, but external expert lecturers may also be invited.

Readings for this module will include:

  • Delves PJ, Martin SJ, Burton DR.ÌýRoitt'sÌýEssential Immunology 13E:Ìý2017
  • GieseckeÌýJ.ÌýModern Infectious Disease EpidemiologyÌý2017
  • HennekensÌýCH,ÌýBuringÌýJEÌýEpidemiology in Medicine:Ìý1987
  • Rothman K J.ÌýModern Epidemiology. Boston: Little, Brown, 1986. The most rigorous exposition of epidemiological concepts and principles.
