Description

Cities are now recognised as critical pathways to change: they account for nearly seventy per cent of the world's carbon emissions and are home to more than half of the world's population. Increasingly, cities are pooling strategies to solve urban challenges and tackle pressing issues such as growth, congestion and infrastructure deficits. Cities are now shifting from a basic responsibility for infrastructure delivery, to more holistic strategies around health, wellbeing, cultural identity, economic vibrancy and climate resilience. This module presents a global perspective on urban policy and the innovations that shape the built environment and the economic, environmental, social and material systems that constitute cities. The module draws from diverse disciplinary perspectives including urban studies, science and technology studies, geography, politics and sociology. The course content and assessments will give you the conceptual and analytical tools to grapple with the complex challenges faced by cities. The module provides foundational knowledge for students on the Urban Innovation and Policy route for the STEaPP MPA, and also offers a valuable complement for students on other programmes to bolster their knowledge on the evolving nature of cities and the forms of social, technological and governance innovation that shape urban change.
