Description

This compulsory Year 1 module introduces students to some of the key issues affecting the contemporary global education context. The module focuses particularly on Robert Arnove’s notion of education as being a “dialectic between the global and the local” (2007), by stressing the ways in which formal education systems represent local needs, cultures and histories while also reflecting wider global influences. Some of the key issues discussed include: the impact of global testing regimes; the rise of ‘internationalisation’ strategies in schools and universities; and the tensions and opportunities afforded by increasing multiculturalism, both in the UK and elsewhere.

Teaching delivery:

This module is taught in 10 weekly lectures (1 hour each) and 10 weekly seminars (1.5 hours each).

Indicative Topics: Topics covered in this module include:

  • Theories of Globalisation and Education
  • World Culture of Schooling
  • Education for all? Global frameworks and international organisations
  • Datafication of education and international assessments (e.g. OECD PISA)
  • Education and Conflict
  • Teaching values in schools (e.g. civic nationalism vs cosmopolitanism) and forms of citizenship
  • World Englishes and Unequal Englishes
  • Internationalisation of education and international student mobility

Module Aims:

This module aims to provide students with the following:

  • To introduce students to the notion that formal education systems reflect both local contexts and global trends/influences
  • To foster critical engagement with some of the key contemporary global issues in education
  • To deepen student ability to reflect both personally and critically on international trends, tensions and challenges
  • To foster an interest, and engage deeply, with a context-specific educational issue.
  • Through deeper exploration of a global educational issue, acquire the skills necessary to produce an academically informed argumentative essay.

Recommended readings:

While not a necessary pre-requisite, reading Arnove’s (2013) chapter would be helpful for building familiarity with the key conceptual framing of globalisation in this module.
