This module is only available to students from MA Digital Media: Production and MA Digital Media: Education. Who must also have completed both compulsory modules as a pre-requisite. In terms of authoring software skills, we assume that all students who sign up to the module will already have basic multimodal, sound and video editing skills, including experience with Premiere Pro. We will not be concentrating on software training and tuition during seminars. Some students may come with existing Adobe After Effects knowledge and/or sound editing skills - these will be useful for the various creative tasks and for those opting for the assessed 'audiovisual essay' assignment, rather than the written assignment.

Digital Storytelling and Education aims to engage students in both the theoretical and practical aspects of crafting and presenting digital narratives. We will explore storytelling traditions that existed prior to the advent of digital technology, in order to grasp the fundamental principles of storytelling as a constantly evolving means for creating significance and representing diverse realities through various media. This module investigates the ways in which new media have changed contemporary society and the cultural narratives that shape it, with a particular thematic emphasis on issues of social justice where activism and creativity come together. We will explore various digital storytelling techniques, including textual, diagrammatic/typographic, visual/auditory, 2-D and 3-D stop-frame animation and hypermedial methods, culminating in constructing multilinear and multimedia stories. We will critically engage with hypertext fiction, animated texts, podcasts and more, concerning ourselves with non-linear narratives, and changing hybrid forms. Throughout our classes, we will critically reflect on the production of digital fiction and non-fiction that engages with representation, and the affective dimensions of form and rhetoric.
