Description

This practice-oriented module provides an introduction to game design. Through game analysis and the application of theory-informed game design concepts, such as layering and procedural rhetoric, students will have the opportunity to explore various aspects of games production, including worldbuilding, mechanics design, balancing and a critical reflection on the different modes of game production, games industries, game design as a professional practice. Students completing this module will have a foundation to develop playful artefacts in digital and non-digital formats, and to engage with and critique different modes of game production and circulation. Rather than providing a vocational qualification, this module, through critical engagement with theory and practice, enables students to create, modify, and engage with videogames as critically informed, reflexive designers.
