Linda Hu

Meet Linda from China who attended the Pre-University Online Course in 2024.

Linda

Where were you during the Pre-University Online Course?

I was born in China and went abroad to attend high school after junior high school.

In the last summer of high school, I took an online course at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË, hoping to learn about the study life in university in advance.

In my high school, there was not too much homework after school, so I did not have strong self-study abilities.

But »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË courses are quite different, we have group discussions every day, and each group has about five people. We need to share and exchange ideas with each other and finally make a summary.

In the three years of high school, I rarely drafted literary papers like academic essays, so I did not know what factors are needed for a good essay.

Through this UCL course, I learned a lot of paper writing skills and submitted a paper on global warming after finishing the course, which got a good grade.

Why did you choose the Pre-University Online Course?

I cannot go to the UK to attend the offline summer school, therefore online courses are more convenient for me, which is the most important reason.

At the same time, UCL is a highly ranked university in the world, and I believe I can improve a lot through this course. In fact, it is, I learned a lot.

Do you have any personal highlights from the course and why?

I am most interested in the course called 'How to write a good essay'. It is the first time for me to learn how to draft an academic essay. This course is particularly important and valuable to me. This will make it easier for me to draft essays during my final year of high school and at university.

Which skills have you developed during the course?

I improved my oral English and exercised my ability to think, speak up bravely and share ideas with other students.

Under the guidance of my tutor, I also successfully completed an unforgettable presentation.

What do you want to do once you’ve finished high school?

I am currently majoring in mathematics and I am extremely interested in it. There is a high probability that I will choose pure math as my major in college.

Although I am also curious about economics, it is a pity that I could not choose economics and advanced mathematics at the same time in high school due to the subject selection restrictions.

If I had the opportunity at university, I am willing to study economics as a second degree without any doubt.

What advice would you give to future Pre-University Online Course students?

The most important thing is to take lessons in a quiet room with good internet connection. I was nervous before the course started, and as a non-native English speaker, I was worried that I would not be able to communicate with the tutors fluently, but that did not happen. The tutors are responsible, kind and patient.

As long as students can do bold expression, I believe this course will be unforgettable for all students.

By the way, students had better have a pen and paper ready to take notes at any time.
