Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slavery 'Valuable Lives' Project Awarded £20,000

22 November 2023

The Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slavery is delighted to have received a Knowledge Exchange and Innovation Funding award of £20,000 to support our ongoing project, ‘Valuable Lives: Phase Two of the Legacies of British Slavery Database.’

The 'Valuable Lives' project will digitise and transcribe registers held at the National Archives to create an open-access and globally reaching database of every person enslaved in the British Empire between 1817 and 1832. Doing so will open up vast new potential for retracing families and reinscribing and memorialising the histories of thousands of communities.

The Centre is currently recruiting Research Assistants to begin constructive tasks toward building the database in January 2024. We are very grateful for this generous grant in support of the ground-breaking Valuable Lives project.
