Clinical Lecturer (CL) Extensions

Information on how to apply for a CL extension.

As a NIHR funded or locally funded (NIHR recognised) CL you have the option to apply for an extension post-CCT provided this is within the 4 years of funding of your CL award.

  • NIHR CL extension is for a maximum of 24 months beyond CCT, or until the 4-year funding maximum is reached. For example, a CL who uses 3.5 years of the funding to reach CCT will be offered a 6-month extension.
  • Except in exceptional circumstances, post-CCT CLs must reduce their clinical commitments to 2 clinical sessions per week, which should be sufficient to maintain clinical skills and remain appointable as a NHS consultant.
  • Trainees in craft specialties may undertake up to 4 clinical sessions per week. Where an extension is granted, NIHR CLs hold the title of honorary consultant, provided that it is not a salaried position.
  • It is not possible to take up a full consultant post while holding an NIHR Clinical Lectureship award.
  • CLs must apply for a NIHR extension as they are not automatically given; extensions are considered on a case-by-case basis and are not guaranteed to be approved.
  • Applications for an extension mustbe made at least 6 months prior to CCT.
  • If you do not reach CCT before the end of your 4-year CL post, then no extensions can be considered.
  • GP CLs are ineligible for a post-CCT extension, as they have already gained CCT and are fully qualified.

To apply for a CL extension please read the or contact Sarah Mackilligin for further details of how to apply and submit an application.

Please note that NIHR CLs, and thus the extensions, are not consultant posts.

CLsÌýshould be aware of the potential implications of this as part of discussions when exploring the need for an extension locally with respect to their academic aspirations
