Community mobilisation to increase birth attendance by trained health workers in rural Makwanpur

womens-groups

Project Summary

Engaging citizens and communities to make services accountable is vitalÌýto achieving health development goals. Community participation inÌýhealth management committees can increase public accountability ofÌýhealth services. We conducted a cluster randomised controlled trial toÌýtest the impact of strengthened health management committees (HMCs)Ìýand community mobilisation through women's groups, on institutionalÌýdeliveries and deliveries by a trained health worker in rural Nepal.

TheÌýstudy was conducted in all Village Development Committee clusters inÌýthe hilly district of Makwanpur, Nepal (population of 420,500). In 21Ìýclusters intervention clusters we conducted three-day workshops withÌýHMCs to improve their capacity for planning and action, and supportedÌýfemale community health volunteers to run 203 women's groups. TheseÌýgroups met once a month and mobilised communities to addressÌýbarriers to institutional delivery. We compared this intervention withÌý22 control clusters.
