The GLOBE project is funded through the EU's Horizon 2020 programme and brings together an academic consortium of 10 partners from 8 countries to explore major developments in key global governance domains, defined as strategic priorities in the EU’s global strategy, with a view to identifying obstacles to and opportunities for more effective and inclusive governance in a multipolar world. Ìý

The third GLOBE conference, held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, discussed major trends and case studies in issue areas such as climate change, investment protection, finance, trade, security, cyber, development and cross-cutting global governance challenges. GGI researchers are leading on the climate change work package and presented two papers – on multilevel governance under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as well as the potential of the private sector to contribute to climate change mitigation – andÌýprovidedÌýfeedback and input on current global governance shortcomings.

The impact of COVID-19 was also a major point of concern throughout the discussions. To shed light on how global governance institutions have dealt with the pandemic and how this may affect the potential for reform of existing global institutions, GLOBE hosted a public panel discussion on 22 September, featuring experts from Asia, Latin America, and Europe, including GGI Deputy Director Tom Pegram.
