7 - 8 January 

China-US trade talks

Chinese and US officials are meeting in Beijing on 7 and 8 January for talks aimed at defusing tensions around trade between the world’s two largest economies. The talks come a month after the two states declared a 90-day truce in their trade war following a meeting between US president Donald Trump and Chinese president Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires. 

15 January 

Commons vote on Brexit deal

On 15 January, British MPs are schedule to vote on the prime minister's proposed withdrawal agreement with the European Union. The vote in the House of Commons, originally scheduled for December, was delayed as it looked highly unlikely that it would pass. The deal is still facing fierce opposition, including from the prime minister’s own party, but Theresa May has vowed that the vote would not be delayed again.

22 - 25 January 

World Economic Forum

The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum () will take place in Davos, Switzerland from 22-25 January, bringing together leaders from business, government, international organisations, and civil society. Among others, US president Donald Trump has announced that he will attend the WEF meeting for the second time. This year’s meeting will take place under the theme of "Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution".
