5 July

US Secretary of State to visit North Korea

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will fly to Pyongyang on 5 July to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. This will be the first face-to-face diplomatic exchange between the US and North Korea since last month's Singapore summit between Kim and US President Donald Trump. Pompeo's trip was confirmed over North Korea's commitment to fully surrender its nuclear weapons programme.

6 July

UK cabinet meeting on BrexitÌý

This Friday, UK ministers will meet at Chequers, the Prime Minister's country residence, to make key decisions on the UK's preferred economic relationship with the EU. Theresa May's disunited cabinet is charged with finalising a detailed white paper, expected to be published on 9 July, that sets out the government's Brexit strategy. However, according to EU sources, a draft of the white paper has as unrealistic by senior officials in Brussels.Ìý

6 July

US and China to charge higher tariffs on imported goodsÌý

From 6 July, the US plans to impose a first set of tariffs on goods from China that contain industrially significant technologies. China has vowed to respond by imposing levies of the same scale. US President Donald Trump has argued that the tariffs are essential to respond to unfair Chinese trade practices in the area of intellectual property and technology transfers. The US has also imposed tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from the EU, Canada and Mexico, citing national security threats, and has on European cars. Amid the mounting trade dispute, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker is expected to meet with Trump in Washington before the end of July.Ìý

9-18 July

High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development

From 9-18 July 2018, world leaders will gather at the annual , convened under the auspices of the United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Council. This year's theme is "Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies." The HLPF is the main UN platform to follow-up and review the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

11-12 July

Annual NATO Summit

The annual NATO Summit will take place in Brussels from 11-12 July, amid rising tensions between the US and its NATO allies. A divisive issue will include financial burden-sharing, with US President Donald Trump having repeatedly complained that Germany and other European NATO members need to increase their contribution to the military alliance.

12-14 July

US President Trump to visit UK

Following the NATO summit in Brussels, US President Trump will make his first official visit to the UK this month. He is scheduled to meet the Queen at Windsor Castle as well as Prime Minister Theresa May at her country residence. His visit is expected to draw mass public protests in London.Ìý

16 July

Trump-Putin Summit in Helsinki

Ìý

On 16 July, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet for a summit in Helsinki, Finland, which will include a one-on-one meeting between the two leaders. The summit comes at a time of poor relations between the US and Russia, with divisive issues including the Syria and Ukraine conflict and Russia's alleged meddling in the US elections. Both sides have already downplayed the potential for the meeting to deliver concrete results.Ìý

25 July

General elections in Pakistan

Ìý

General elections in Pakistan are scheduled for 25 July, pitting the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of former cricket star Imran Khan. The election comes at a time of growing economic and political instability, after former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was ousted by the Supreme Court in July 2017 on corruption charges. In the run-up to the vote, observers and activists have raised by the Pakistani military.

29 July

Presidential elections in Mali

Seeking re-election, Mali's President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta will face more than a dozen challengers in elections scheduled for 29 July. The elections will take place in a context marked by serious security concerns, including terror threats and ethnic killings, raising doubts about the feasibility of holding elections in some parts of the country.

31 July

General elections in Zimbabwe

On 31 July, Zimbabweans will head to the polls for the first time since the ouster of long-time President Robert Mugabe in November 2017. While observers are hopeful that the elections will be less violent than previous ones, security fears are high after the attempted assassination of President Emmerson Mnangagwa at a campaign rally last month.Ìý
