Every month, the GGI compiles a list of upcoming international events that have some implications for its work. Here is a compilation of global meetings and events coming up in September 2018.
| 2-4 September | Parliamentary elections in Rwanda Rwanda will hold parliamentary elections from 2 to 4 September, with over 500 candidates competing for the 80 seats up for grabs in the lower house (the Chamber of Duties). |
| 2-5 September | Duterte to visit Israel聽 The president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, is set to visit Israel from 2 to 5 September. This will be the first official visit since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1967. Although Israel has traditionally maintained strong ties with the Philippines, Duterte's visit has sparked controversy in Israel given his poor human rights record and , in which he compared his anti-drug campaign to the holocaust.听 |
4-9 September | Bangkok Climate Conference聽 From 4 to 9 September, the Bangkok Climate Conference will bring together negotiators for an to facilitate timely completion of the Paris Agreement work programme. The extra round of talks was scheduled after earlier negotiations in Bonn made insufficient progress on agreeing on the technical details of the Paris rulebook.听 |
| 6 September | Yemen Peace Talks in Geneva The UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffith, representatives of the Yemeni government and the rebel Houthi movement to Geneva on 6 September to discuss a framework for peace talks. They will be the first talks in two years, after two previous rounds failed. For more than three years, Yemen has been engulfed in a devastating civil war that is widely seen as a proxy conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran.听 |
| 9 September | General elections in Sweden Sweden will hold general elections on 9 September. With issues such as crime and immigration high on the political agenda, observers are particularly concerned about the , which is currently polling at a record 20%, just behind the ruling Social Democrats and the main opposition Moderates. |
| 11-15 September | Russia to hold largest military exercise since Cold War Citing a hostile international climate, Russia is planning to hold its . Starting on 11 September, the Vostok-2018 operation will mobilise around 300,000 troops, more than 1,000 aircraft, 36,000 military vehicles and two naval fleets. Units from China and Mongolia will also be involved in the exercise.听 |
| 12-14 September | Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco The , convened by Governor Jerry Brown and the State of California in San Francisco from 12 to 14 September, aims to accelerate action and build momentum in the lead up to the December global climate summit (COP 24) in Katowice. The event provides a platform for state, regional and local governments, businesses, investors and civil society to showcase and encourage climate action at all levels.听 |
| 14 September | Talks on new Syrian constitution The UN Special Envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, has invited officials from seven countries to Geneva on 14 September for talks on setting up a constitutional committee to draft a new Syrian constitution. The talks will bring together senior representatives from Britain, Egypt, France, Germany, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United States. De Mistura will also meet officials from Russia, Turkey and Iran on 11 and 12 September.听 |
| 18-30 September | 73rd session of the UN General Assembly聽 The 73rd session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 73) will open on 18 September. This year's general debate will be held under the theme 'Making the United Nations Relevant to All People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies'. In addition, high-level UN meetings will focus on tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), financing for the 2030 Agenda and global peace (the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit). | 20 September | EU Summit in Salzburg On 20 September, EU leaders will convene in Salzburg, Austria, for an informal summit. While the meeting will primarily focus on migration it may also provide a critical forum for discussions on Brexit. , French president Emmanuel Macron aims to use the summit to push for a close post-Brexit relationship between the EU and the UK. |
| 23 September | India to Launch 'Modicare'聽聽 India's National Health Protection Mission (NHPM), also known as 'Modicare', will roll out on 25 September. Modicare is a massive new public health insurance scheme, providing cover for advanced treatments such as surgery and cancer care for 100 million poor and vulnerable families. The vote is feared to be marred by the government鈥檚 intimidation of the political opposition and media, with a documenting the sustained crackdown on any kind of dissent in the country. |
| 30 September聽 | Macedonia name change referendum On 30 September, Macedonia will hold a referendum that will ask voters if they back NATO and EU accession by accepting a historic 'name' . Under the agreement, which was signed in June, Macedonia will change its official name to 'Republic of North Macedonia' and, in return, Greece will lift its veto on the country's NATO and EU integration. Polls suggest that a majority of citizens will vote in favour of the deal. |
