Call for interest for B-MEntor Mentoring Scheme for PGR students from BAME backgrounds

19 October 2022

We are looking for mentors and mentees to participate in our new mentoring pilot for UCL Postgraduate Research (PGR) students from Black, Asian, Mixed and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.

Equality Act 2010

What is B-MEntor?

B-MEntor is a well-established mentoring programme that offers a unique platform for Black, Asian, Mixed and Minority Ethnic academic, research and Professional Services staff to strengthen their skills and improve their networking capability through cultivating cross-institutional relationships. B-MEntor is now in its 10th year. ÌýThe new B-MEntor PGR scheme aims to address the underrepresentation of Black, Asian, Mixed and minority ethnic PGR students and graduates in Higher Education. The programme supports UCL's commitment to delivering pipeline interventions through Positive Action as outlined in the UCL Race Equality Charter Mark and UCL's Race Equality Implementation Action Plan.ÌýÌý

Who is eligible to participate?

  • Mentees: UCL students in the final two years of a Postgraduate Research Degree Programmes (MPhil/PhD, MD Res and professional doctorate programmes such as EngD and DClinPsych)Ìýwho self-identify as Black, Asian, Mixed or minority ethnic.
  • Mentors: Post-doc (with least two years' experience) to Lecturer level academics, researchers and teachers from any background

We would particularly like to encourage students of Black origin to join the programme as they are under-represented as academics and researchers in UCL overall.

What does the scheme involve?

The mentoring period will be approximately one year, and a training and support package is offered for all parties. The selection and matching of mentors and mentees will occur in November, and there is a compulsory training session on Thursday 3rd November from 14:00-16:00 (for Mentees) and Wednesday 2nd November from 10:00-12:00 (for Mentors).

Please register your expression of interest by 5pm on Monday, 31st October 2022. Find out more and register for the scheme on the B-MEntor PGR Mentoring webpage. Ìý
