New training and system launched to help you manage intellectual property and conflicts of interest

Online training is now available to help staff and students manage intellectual property and conflicts of interest at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË. A new system is also in place to help manage conflicts and declare interests.

UCL has launched 2 online training modules for staff and students:Ìý

  • Disclosing and managing conflicts of interest at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈËÌý
  • Understanding and protecting intellectual property (IP)Ìý

Fully accessible versions of both modules (in audio and written format) will be available within the next few weeks.

The ‘UCL Manage Conflicts and Declare Interests’ system has also been developed to enable UCL staff to disclose conflicts and declare interests. The system will go live on 1 December 2020.Ìý

Helping you recognise, disclose and manage conflicts of interestÌý

UCL's new online disclosure-of-conflicts training will help you understand how to recognise, disclose and manage conflicts of interest. It clarifies how to deal with any conflicts that may arise in relation to your role at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË.Ìý

All staff and doctoral students must complete this mandatory training before the end of July 2021. Ìý

The training should take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete (dependingÌýon how many units you need to do, based on your role).ÌýIt’s accessed through the UCL MyLearning portal.Ìý

The training supports UCL’s Disclosure of Conflict and Declaration of Interest Policy, which you also should refer to. Ìý

Disclose conflicts and declare interests using the new systemÌý

All staff and doctoral students must disclose any actual, potential or perceived conflicts of interest through the new ‘UCL Manage Conflicts and Disclose Interests’ system. Ìý

Additionally, staff at grade 10 and over, as well as other senior staff listed in the policy, are required to complete an annual declaration of interest. (Please note that this is a change from the previous policy where staff at grade 6 and above were required to complete this annual declaration.) ÌýÌýÌý

The system can be accessed via from 1 December 2020.

Helping you understand and protect IP Ìý

UCL's new online IP training is designed to help you understand how IP is owned, managed and used at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË, and how this applies to your role. Ìý

All staff and students are encouraged to complete the training.Ìý

For the following staff and studentsÌýthe training is mandatory and must be completed before the end of July 2021:Ìý

  • Academics, research associates and doctoral students Ìý
  • Professional services research support staff (such as all those in roles creating and handling research outputs, supporting research proposals and collaborations) Ìý
  • Innovation and enterprise support staff (such as business managers, partnership managers)
  • All staff at grade 10 and aboveÌý
  • Staff involved in procuring specialist servicesÌý
