Supervisors:ÌýProfessor Aroon Hingorani

Lay summary:

Atherosclerosis is the build-up of fat and inflammatory material in the walls of blood vessels, a process which can lead to blockage of blood vessels which underlies conditions such as heart attacks and stroke. High levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), a particular type of fat circulating in the blood is a definite cause of atherosclerosis. However, it is unclear whether other circulating fats, such as those containing triglycerides are also involved in atherosclerosis disease progression.Ìý

I aim to confirm or refute the causal role of triglycerides in heart disease and stroke using state-of-the art omics tools in a population genetic approach.Ìý
