Study Abroad

Starting in 2025-2026, BA single-honours students, including those on the MAT route, will have the opportunity to study abroad during their third year of studies. You must opt-in to an application-based study abroad option once you begin your UCL degree.Ìý

To transfer to this programme, students must complete the Study Abroad application process and successfully obtain a placement. A limited number of Study Abroad placements will be available, and places will be subject to students' first-year grades and a successful application in their second year. After completing the year abroad, students will return to UCL for their final year of studies. The degree programme's total duration for students accepted for the optional year abroad is four years.Ìý

The range of Study Abroad options available to you can be found in the Options Guide.

The UCL Study Abroad Office and our History of Art Study Abroad Tutor will help advise students interested in applying for a year abroad on the language of instruction at the approved partner universities. Students may attend a university that teaches in English or another language if they have sufficient proficiency in the target language. Students will likely be required to provide evidence of their proficiency as part of their application. Most of our partners require an intermediate proficiency in the target language. All UCL History of Art students take a language option during their first year of studies in London; we recommend that they continue to study this language in their second year of studies if they are allocated a place at a university teaching in a language other than English.Ìý

If you complete the Study Abroad option, you will be awarded, depending on your choice of route, a BA (Hons) in History of Art with a Year Abroad or a BA (Hons) in History of Art (Materials and Technology route) with a Year Abroad.

Students from Access and Widening Participation backgrounds may also find the UCL Turing Funding Scheme useful.
