AMER0085 History of Gender and Sexuality in Latin America: New Perspectives

*** MODULE NOT RUNNING IN 2024/25Ìý***

Module leader: to be confirmed.Ìý

Outline

This module explores the Latin American and Latin/x making of sexuality in the Americas. It invites us to consider the historical role played by sexuality in structuring modern Latin American societies and its diasporic cultures. The course will approach sexuality as a conflictive field of articulation of broader social, cultural, and political processes from the ninetieth to the twenty-first century. By addressing the main theoretical, empirical, and methodological debates of the field, this course will encourage students to think critically about the key topics of Latin-American and Latinx Sexuality studies. The module will address diverse topics such as a queer perspective on archives, the sexual dimension of nation-building, sex work, racialization, LGTBIQ+ history, sexual liberation politics, democratization, and trans* embodiment.

Assessment pattern

Assessment methods vary from module to module and are subject to change.Ìý Please email ia-programmes@ucl.ac.uk for further information.
