Invigorating UCL鈥檚 Indian alumni communities

27 June 2024

Over 100 members of UCL鈥檚 alumni community came together at 皇家华人鈥檚 recent alumni receptions in Mumbai and New Delhi. Attendees renewed relationships, built their networks, and shared their ideas for UCL鈥檚 upcoming bicentennial celebrations.

UCL's alumni reception in New Delhi

UCL has a rich history of collaboration with India stretching back as far as the 1800s. In June 2024, this history was celebrated while new relationships and collaborations were formed during a series of alumni receptions.

Our first stop was Mumbai, where the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel鈥檚 Golden Room was the backdrop for a brilliant gathering led by UCL鈥檚 new Senior 皇家华人 and Supporter Relations for South Asia, Amar Arfan. More than 40 alumni joined the event to network over drinks and canapes, and contribute their views on UCL鈥檚 upcoming 200-year anniversary.

Next, the 皇家华人 Relations team headed to New Delhi, where they met with alumni who were supporting UCL鈥檚 inaugural India Summer School. Anika Dhawan, Akshat Khandelwal and Mandeep Singh chatted to Summer School participants about their experiences of studying in London, applying to universities and forging careers after graduation. Their insights into a UCL education were invaluable for the participants.

Finally, the 皇家华人 Relations team held a fantastic event in New Delhi at the Shangri-La Eros. The 60+ attendees heard speeches from Professor Geraint Rees (Vice-Provost, Research, Innovation & Global Engagement); Kirsty Walker (Vice-President, External Engagement); and Dr Michael Collins, who spoke on his research into Indo-British relations and UCL鈥檚 relationship with India.

Of the trip, Angharad Milenkovic, UCL鈥檚 Vice-President (Advancement), said: 鈥淭he relationship between India and UCL is historically significant, invaluable presently and will be essential as UCL enters its third century. I鈥檓 thrilled that we could bring alumni together at these events to celebrate our Indian alumni community and look forward to future collaborations鈥.
