1. What is the Delayed Assessment Scheme?

The Delayed Assessment Scheme entitles all taught students to three Delayed Assessment Permits per Academic Year. The permits grant you pre-determined flexibility on eligible assessments. The scheme, unlike ECs, grants an automatic extension without you needing to wait for approval, however, the mitigation provided will be decided in advance by UCL.  If you use all three of your DAPs, flexibility for future assessments can only be granted using the Extenuating Circumstances (EC) procedure. ECs have strict grounds for eligibility and evidence requirements.

The Delayed Assessment Scheme is here to support you in being an autonomous learner and allows you to balance the challenges of study, life and, most importantly, your wellbeing.

If you are experiencing significant difficulties which would classify as Extenuating Circumstances you should submit an Extenuating Circumstances claim regardless of whether you have DAPs remaining.

2. How do I know when to use a Delayed Assessment Permit (DAP) and when to submit an EC claim?

Please read our Guidance: Which process should I use? page.

DAPs and ECs are designed to be used in different circumstances.

  • Extenuating Circumstances are for emergencies. Submit an EC claim if you have experienced circumstances that are significantly disruptive, sudden, unexpected and beyond your control. It is important that you engage with the EC process to make sure that we provide you with the appropriate mitigation and support.

See this Grounds for Extenuating Circumstances guidance for a list of types of circumstances which will normally be considered.
  • DAPs are for circumstances that do not qualify for an EC. They support you in being autonomous learners and help to balance the challenges of study, life and your wellbeing.

We recognise that sometimes you might need more time for assessments not necessarily because you’re experiencing significant disruption beyond your control, and not because you’re not working hard but because, simply put, life gets in the way. This could range from minor illnesses not normally grounds for ECs, to needing extra time to complete an assessment due to other commitments. Student life can be difficult to manage, and sometimes you might just need a little flexibility to manage your studies and your wellbeing.

4. What are the implications of submitting a DAP?

This depends on the circumstances. Before submitting a DAP, you should check that you understand what the mitigation will be and consider the impacts that it will have.

You should consider the following.

  • How many DAPs do you have remaining?
  • Is this really a good use of a permit which may remove flexibility when you need it in the future?
  • Is a DAP the right support for this circumstance?
  • Have you considered the other support outlined in the Student Support Framework Guidance: Which process should I use?
  • Would a deferral mean a delay to progression or completion and can you accommodate this?
  • Will you need to complete a Late Summer Assessment as a result of a deferral and are you available during this period?

9. What if I have a SoRA and want to use a DAP?

If you have a SoRA but also wish to use a DAP, you should submit your DAP before the standard assessment deadline, not your SoRA deadline. You can still use your SoRA extension in addition to the new DAP deadline.

For example if the original deadline for an assessment is October 14 and your SoRA deadline is October 21, then if you submit a DAP before 14 October, your new DAP deadline will be 21 October. Your SoRA will be additional extension on your new DAP deadline.

10. What if I already have an EC and want to use a DAP?

DAPs should not be used in addition to extensions already granted using ECs. If you need an extension to an existing EC, you should discuss this with your department.
