Heart scarabs
Heart scarabs are attested from the mid Thirteenth Dynasty on. They are common in elite burials of the New Kingdom (about 1550-1069 BC ) and later, and were often worn from a necklace around the neck. They did not replace the heart in the mummy as is sometimes claimed. The flat underside was usually inscribed with 'Book of the Dead' chapter 30. unprovenanced heart scarabs A variant form: Ramesside heart amulets with a human head Vanlathem 2001 (on the heart scarabs found in situ) |
